(More customer reviews)I had purchased one of these units for my kids some years ago and it worked great. SO I ordered another unit recently.
The new unit has a terrible noxious smell coming from the guts of the unit when turned on - seems like the plastic in the HEPA filter or motor oil in the electric motor. After running it a few days with no change I returned this unit and recieved a new one with the same problem. I also talked to the manufacturer, KAZ, since it seemed like they got a bad batch of filters. They were willing to provide a new unit if I paid for the shipping. The status of this unit is still unresolved.
I would not recomend this unit to anyone unless you can tolerate the smell of noxious organic materials - such organic vapors could even be carcinogenic.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this today at Fry's Electronics for $199, but really wanted a 5300 model, which they were out of as it is being discontinued. Later I found 5300 model could be purchased at Walgreens for $149. The only difference between the two as far as I can see is that there is a washable filter in the 5500, which might save me some money in the long run. My home showed "green" but I put it on the top speed to clear out the air anyway. It is loud at that speed, but very quiet at first 2 speeds. Later I will like the auto mode which switches to whatever the sensor thinks the fan should be on according to air quality. It is nice looking. I can't say much now but it seems a little overpriced to me. I did not buy the extended warranty and hope nothing goes wrong as it only has a 1 year warranty. You still must replace the carbon filters every 3 months. Besides the one in the unit they give you 3 more carbon filters so this should last a year but maybe more if I vacuum it. The other washable filter should be washed every 6 months and can be washed 6 times and then must be replaced.

Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier - Sandstone Review

(More customer reviews)I am becoming less and less thrilled with Austin Air. We have purchased over a dozen of these units for our home and for others in the past 10 years and at first, we were really happy with them. The DO clean the air and ARE good for allergies but the DO break within months of their warranty and the company is NOT helpful with getting them taken care of. Every person gives you a different story and blames the last person - even when you speak to the same person 2x you get two different opinions and over the years they keep changing how they fix units and the costs. It now costs $100 parts/labor and about $60 shipping both ways to have them fix a unit. If you do this every several years PLUS need to change the filter every 2-3 years it is REALLY expensive to have these units. I'd feel differently if I felt the customer service was helpful but I was so frustrated the last time we needed to send in yet another unit and yet again the price went up and they didn't know what to do...as someone who has sent 50+ customers their way in the past 10 years as well as I work with chemically sensitive people, I am now looking at other options.

(More customer reviews)I ordered two of these filters in January 2008. There was a slight delay in shipping, however, Filters Now called me to explain the reason. The filters I received worked excellent in my Panasonic air cleaner. I will be reordering today (March 1, 2009) and expect no shipping delays. By ordering two at a time, the shipping cost is $4.00 per filter. I have been very satisfied with the service I received from Filters Now and with the filters.

Sun-Pure SP-20 UV Air Purifier Review

(More customer reviews)If you seriously need a great air purifier, and can afford this one, I highly recommend it. My wife is allegic to my cat, I have asthma, and we can't be without this. I don't trust ozone generators, and this is used widely in hospitals. I have had other air cleaners - this is much better, and quiet (use the sleep mode).

Honeywell 19002 Universal Air Cleaner Prefilter (set of 2) Review

(More customer reviews)A sneezy friend of mine got a HEPA air filter for his bedroom and said bullishly, "It changed my life!" So I bought a Honeywell HEPA air filter for my sneezy wife (along with allergy dust covers for pillows, mattesses, etc).
In the big picture I don't think any lives were changed, but this is certainly a resaonably well made and cost effective HEPA air filter, suitable for getting all kinds of small particulate airborne gunk out of your airsteam. We were both relieved to find that my sneezy wife was not allergic to her new husband, but only to his futon. But that's another story.
If you or one you love is sneezy at night, an air filter like this might just make you all really happy. And the filter makes a pleasant swooshing sound that may in time come to remind you of wind or waves. Turn it on high 20 min before bedtime and then switch it to low when you actually hit the sack. Low is much quieter.

AllerAir AA-Air Tube With Metal Housing Review

(More customer reviews)Of course we can't know how things would be WITHOUT this air purifier, but it seems (to me) to be helping. I have Multiple Chemical Sensitivity and I'm doing better. Now, we've also recently moved out of a mold-infested home, BUT we now have attached neighbors who smoke, and it's difficult to get away from plastic odors, etc. etc. I feel that this purifier helps. The science behind it also makes sense. I also like the feature where you can turn it down so it's still working but it's not as loud. Even at the highest "setting," it's not obnoxious--like a very small fan noise, I think. It's also very easy to move, etc., with its nice top handle and not-too-heavy design. The circular shape also makes sense to me (to circulate the air), and it's reasonably "nice looking" in our living space.
