Surround Air Multi Tech XJ-3000E Air Purifier Review

Surround Air Multi Tech XJ-3000E Air Purifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have two different models of this air filter. We bought one and used it. Then, we bought another unit. They run 24x7 in my house because some family members have allergies and we have multiple pets. I've had no problems at all. The noise level is quite tolerable to us, even with one sitting right behind the sofa. One thing I have to remember to do is turn them on again after a power failure. However, that's a safety feature and I don't want most electrical appliances coming on automatically after a power outage. The big advantage to this brand is that the air filters last longer and are easy to change. In addition, the controls allow the user to select the combination of features he wants to use.

Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-780A (covers up to 815 sq. ft.) Ultra-Quiet Air Purifier - Stylish, Efficient and Energy StarĀ® Certified, Wall-Mountable
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I wanted an air purifier for my living room where I have some electronics that need protection from smoke and dust. I also needed a unit that could realistically and reliably clean the air sufficiently in this 250 square foot area and help remove the odor and particulate matter from occasional cigarette smoke that may drift into the room. It's a large volume area because of the high cathedral ceiling and open design. While that may not sound too difficult to accomplish with many mid to large air purifiers, I also wanted a unit that was as silent as possible, and that's not so easy to find.
I spent several weeks researching air purifiers and came away with the conclusion that IQ Air, Austin Air and Blueair are probably the best that the industry has to offer as far as big and powerful air purifiers go these days (IQ Air has a carbon filter with 5 pounds of charcoal and Austin Air has 15 pounds of charcoal ... 15 pounds!). So why didn't I choose one of those? Price, noise level, size and looks were the determining factors (although Blueair has good noise ratings and they look attractive, but are a bit on the pricey side). Excluding any of those models wasn't easy. Nor was it easy to cross off less expensive mid-power sized units from Sharp and Winix. I also had a difficult time choosing between several models of Rabbit Air. Decisions ... decisions....
In order to educate myself in the murky waters of outrageous air purifier claims, I turned to the internet, but at first I found no real help (not many websites review air purifiers). I had recently purchased a small, one-room air purifier from Alen and didn't do enough research. Turned out that I wasn't exactly thrilled with that purchase (although it's really not a bad unit per se ... I rated it 3 stars). Fortunately, I eventually found a website that took reviewing and testing of these products very seriously, which gave me more confidence when I decided to go for a more powerful (and expensive) unit in the living room. I highly recommend Air-Purifier-Power as the one and ONLY source (at present) to help shed some light on this less than stellar industry. Personally, I wouldn't rely on Consumer Reports as far as air purifiers go. I found them to be of little help and their testing methods for air purifiers have been under fire for years, and I can see why. What they rated highly gave me a good chuckle.
So now that I have the Rabbit Air 700A, what do I think? As the title indicates, this is a very quiet air purifier, perhaps one of the top two or three in the industry (of the ones that have fans ... I won't go into what I think about those that don't have fans). This unit has five different fan speeds (silent, low, medium, high and turbo). To me, noise level was as critical as cleaning ability. What good is an air purifier if it interferes with your daily living? I didn't want to have to turn up the TV to drown out a fan. Of course at the two top speeds (high and turbo), one can easily hear the 700A throughout the house. Still, its high speed is quieter than many products at mid speeds. So do yourself a favor and check out fan output (CFM) and the associated noise level (dBA) on any model you may want to purchase. The Rabbit Air 700A is about 46 dBA on turbo speed (@ 187 CFM) and under 21 dBA on silent speed (@47 CFM)! BTW, some products are even quieter than this, but check the CFM to see if they are putting out as much air at that noise level.
I chose the 700A over the 780A for a couple of reasons, even though I would have preferred black over white (not too impressed with the looks of this white model). The two reasons were value and noise level. These two models are virtually identical except the fan is revved up a bit on the 780A, making it a tad louder, but has the ability to suck in and blow more air and cover a little larger area. The first three speeds on the 700A (silent, low, medium) are indeed quiet, and the silent speed is aptly named. I have to get within 4 or 5 feet to begin hearing it. The CADR (clean air delivery rate) rating on the 700A and 780A is the same (except the 780A has a slightly better Pollen rating). As far as square footage is concerned, divide any number that these manufacturers spew out by two (normal ceilings) or three (high ceilings) and you will get a closer idea of what is realistic. If you assume the manufacturer's claims are legit, you may be in for disappointment (I'm pretty sure they calculate all these numbers based upon normal ceiling height and maximum fan speed, which is unrealistic in the normal home environment). I'd like to see a CADR rating at each fan speed and the use of volume in addition to square footage as far as coverage specification, but fat chance that these will ever be implemented.
What separated the Rabbit Air products from each other (the 700A and 780A vs their other models), as well as other manufacturers models, is the ability to choose a custom filter (they have four to choose from at present: germ, toxin, pet allergy and odor). This is a great idea, and one can order a specific filter type depending upon one's needs. I find this makes perfect sense. And installing and changing filters is simple and painless (pealing off the cellophane wrapper on these filters is a bigger pain than installing them). It also has a permanent pre-filter one can vacuum and/or wash, which I find a very important feature. Pre-filters pick up the biggest particulate matter, and I will no longer buy an air purifier without a cleanable pre-filter. Live and learn.
The ad states that it is a six stage purification system: anti-microbial pre-filter (read silver), anti-bacterial medium filter (additional dust catcher, which is unusual in the industry and helps not to overtax the HEPA filter), BioGS HEPA filter (I guess it gets that name because they added some anti-viral agents ... yeah, whatever), custom filter (not many companies I know, if any, have this option) and carbon filter (although I doubt there is much more than a pound of charcoal in it, but I haven't measured the weight). I guess the mysterious sixth stage is a negative ion generator (the good kind, but who knows these days?). I like the fact that their filter kits, which include the four changeable filters, are reasonably priced and are one of the better values I have found.
This model comes with a decent set of electronics and lights for giving you information, plus it performs automatic cycling (changes fan speed depending upon the air quality that the particle sensor reads), but it doesn't come with an odor sensor. This probably isn't too big of a deal since these sensors are hardly reference quality to begin with. However, even knowing the limitations of these sensors, I like the idea of having them included and thought for the price I paid for the 700A an odor sensor should have come with this unit. At least the particle sensor gives me some feedback (accuracy not withstanding) and a baseline to go from.
Rating air purifiers may not be too accurate unless one has used their particular model for a full filter cycle (anywhere from 6 months to a year depending upon the environment it is in). I've only owned this product for a little over 2 months now, and during that time I found the quality and performance has been very good. If things change during the year, I'll report back. So, between 1 and 10, I rate the Rabbit Air MinusA2 SPA-700A (that's a mouthful) an 8, or a solid 4-star rating, but this is assuming it will give me years of untroubled service (it does come with a 5 year warrantee, which is a big plus). Other than thinking it should have included an odor sensor (one of their cheaper models include this), I wish it had a more hefty carbon filter, say 3 pounds of charcoal at minimum, but it is what it is. This marginal carbon filter is the reason I selected the custom odor filter option (although I may opt for a different custom filter later on and swap them whenever I choose). I also felt that they should have provided a wall mounting bracket since they advertise it being wall mountable. Now if this bracket was an expensive to make add-on, I'd understand. But it's a bracket they make for a buck and sell for 10, so I consider this wringing out every cent they can from the consumer. I also had to laugh at their ridiculous claim concerning their "mood" light. Still, I'm pretty happy with this unit, but for the life of me I don't know where I can put it so it will be unobtrusive (but that would be the case for any of these devices).

Austin Air HealthMate Review

Austin Air HealthMate
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I searched through a large selection of air filters trying to optimize price, utility, reputation, and ease of use (I don't have time to replace some components every 6 months and other components every 3 months, etc). I decided on the Austin Air Healthmate Air Purifier. From there, it was a search for a reasonable retailer. Due to price (along with free shipping) and Amazon backing, I chose All Seasons Health.
The product arrived quickly and in perfect condition--I would definitely order other products through this retailer.
I pulled the Healthmate out of the box and after reading the instructions, I plugged it in and away it went (yep, that was it). I was having a problem with new carpet installation (an abundance of VOC's causing watering eyes, sore throat, and dizziness); the difference in just two days was remarkable and noticed by others. The Healthmate has three settings, low, medium, and high. The output on high is amazing and has an added benefit of dramatically increasing airflow in the room. The low setting is quiet enough to sit next to the machine and watch a movie without difficulty.
According to the instructions, in about four to five years I will have to replace the filter inside and from a cursory review of the instructions, it should be much simpler than replacing my water filter.
I will add further comments closer to allergy season.

IQAir AM GCX Air Cleaner Review

IQAir AM GCX Air Cleaner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There is no magical, cheap, silent, super-energy efficient way to REALLY clean air. PERIOD. There are only measured compromises.
The IQAir is the absolute best air cleaner available to the public. It makes a bit of noise, but very, very little for the massive volume of air. It uses a bit of electricity, but it takes power to pump air through such absolutely, ridiculously, fabulously purifying multi-stage filters. THINK about it.
The filters seem pricey. THEY AREN'T. The filters last a stupefyingly long time. They are huge and thick--everything they need to be, to stop greater than 99% of .003 micron particulates, plus the huge .3 micron particules that make the filters HEPA certified. Just try to picture the difference--a thousand times smaller. That's like the difference in size between a b-b and a 15 foot diameter ball (if they exist). If you spend a bit more, you get gas filtering too. Spend a little more and get yourself a cleanroom certified IQAir, if you need it.
An IQAir Healthpro Plus saved my wife and I from suffering while several brush fires over the past few years have lapped at our neighborhood. Before having the IQAir, we both suffered gravely whenever brush fires were anywhere within 50 miles.
After two years of us raving about our IQAir, our next door neighbors (asthma sufferers) sought refuge in our home during the last fire which was a couple miles upwind and within sight of our house. One evening of easy breathing was enough to convince the cheapskates to pony up for an IQAir (and donate to charity their various Honeywell, Hunter and other big-box store joke filters scattered around their house).

HolmesĀ® HAP726-U True HEPA Allergen Remover for Medium to Large Rooms
Average Reviews:

I really like this air cleaner. I have used several other models (sharper image, honeywell, etc.) and this is my favorite. I usually use level 1 at night, and level 2 during the day when I am home. Levels 3 and 4 are a bit loud. I like that I can program it to run for a certain amount of time and not have to worry about turning it off. On really hot days, i will actually program it to run for a few hours to keep the house cool for my pets.

As most allergy sufferers know, the home poses as great a threat of itchy eyes and running noses as the great outdoors. Airborne particles from dust, tobacco smoke, and mold spores provide plenty of discomfort indoors. Luckily the allergy-inflicted populace can actively combat these indoor irritants by regularly vacuuming carpets, dusting, and using an air purifier or allergen remover, like this model from Holmes. With HEPA filtration, the allergen remover elminates 99.97 percent of airborne allergens, as small as .3 microns. The appliance also fights unseemly odors with an absorbant carbon filter.
The allergen remover features an understated design that adapts for upright or side placement. It fits nicely against a wall or into a corner, though it is small enough to rest on tabletops too. CADR-rated, the allergen remover accommodates medium rooms up to 256 square feet in area. A GE motor powers the allergen remover and four speed settings enable output options for the room's needs. The digital panel displays a timer for preset intervals of operation. An electronic filter monitor indicates when filters need replacement. This model uses Holmes filter models HAPF60PDQ-U and HAPF600PDQ-U for allergen and odor protection. As with any electrical appliance, read all manufacturer guidelines with care prior to use. Holmes covers this item with a limited 5-year warranty. The air purifier measures 15-1/2 by 16-1/2 by 8 inches and weighs 17 pounds upon shipping.

Alen T300 HEPA UV Tower Air Purifier Review

Alen T300 HEPA UV Tower Air Purifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a good air filter. I have pretty bad allergies, and when we first moved into this house it had brand new carpet and I would be miserable 5 minutes after walking in the door. I moved my T300 in from my previous apartment, and about a day later came back and had no allergy symptoms whatsoever.
PROS: -Cleans extremely well.
-Filters last longer than 6 months.
-Quiet on lower settings
CONS: -Have noticed a problem with the back cover. It takes some work to get the unit to recognize that the back cover is installed. Customer service told me I could adjust the sensor for it but haven't tried yet.
-Lamps are ridiculously expensive. Don't last. Don't buy them for sixty bucks! Get the Phillips PL5/UV at bulbman(dot)com for thirteen bucks! Its better and is the exact bulb specs for the T300...
-Noisy on "medium" and "high"

Enviracaire 20500 HEPA Filter Fits 10500, 17000 Review

Enviracaire 20500 HEPA Filter Fits 10500, 17000
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Before ordering a replacement HEPA filter for your Honeywell (or other brand) Air Cleaner, be sure to check the model number on the unit. This filter is for the smaller round unit (Model 10500) and for the smaller of the two upright units with handles (Model 17000). I replace my HEPA filter every year because I am very allergic to cigarette smoke, pollens, dust, molds, and other allergens and irritants. Also, this HEPA filter has pre-filters that wrap around it, so you may want to order a box of those, too. The pre-filters should be changed every 3 months, but I check them more often and vacuum off any accumulated pet hair.

Compatible with Honeywell 10500 and 17000 air cleaners, the Honeywell True HEPA filter is up to 99.97 percent effective at removing particles as small as .3 microns from the air. True HEPA filters collect such annoyances as dust, mold spores, mites, pet dander, and other troublesome allergens. The difference between a HEPA filter and an ionizer is that the former collects and removes the harmful particles from the air, whereas the latter merely displaces it and pushes it around the room. Overall particle reduction depends on many factors, including the amount of air processed, the pollutant type, and the pollutant's introduction rate in the environment.

Honeywell 38002 Enviracare Universal Replacement Pre-Filter Review

Honeywell 38002 Enviracare Universal Replacement Pre-Filter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I follow the manufacturer's recommendation to change the pre-filter every 3 months on all my Honeywell Air Cleaners with HEPA filters. These replacement filters come boxed in a set of two. The pre-filter simply wraps around the round HEPA filter, which is inside the unit, and attaches to itself by means of two velcro fasteners. It takes less than five minutes to change the pre-filter. In between changes, I vacuum my pre-filters to remove accumulated dust and pet hair from them. These pre-filters do help to remove some odors from rooms, especially if you are able to keep the space enclosed where you have the air cleaner running.
Be sure to keep a box or two of these pre-filters on hand in case they become back ordered. The HEPA filter needs to be changed in 1-3 years, depending on conditions where it is located.

For use in virtually all round Honeywell HEPA air purifier models, this universal replacement carbonpre-filter helps capture large airborne particles before passing through the HEPA filter, thereby maximizing the HEPA filter life. The activated carbon pre-filter also helps reduce common household odors. It can be cut to make from 1 to 3 pre-filters, depending on the air purifier model, and it should be replaced every 1 to 3 months.
It fits virtually all Honeywell Round, QuietCare and SilentComfort Series model air purifiers including:10590, 17000, 17005, 17006, 18150, 18155, 50100, 50200-N, 50250-N, HFD-110, and more.

Honeywell HHT-080 Permanent HEPA Tower Air Purifier Review

Honeywell HHT-080 Permanent HEPA Tower Air Purifier
Average Reviews:

My wife loves her cats (multiple), and her dogs (also multiple); she mostly tolerates the kids and me. This winter my allergies were reaching critical mass. My wife gave me this Air Purifier for our room, as a Christmas present, and it has been amazing. One side note, the device puts out a good deal of white noise, personally, I like that, as it helps me sleep, others might find it annoying. My next step is to get them for every other room.
I highly recommend this product.
Update...
This unit worked fine for about a year, then it just died.
While it was worth the cost for the service it did provide, I was a bit disappointed in the durability.

Holmes® HAP412N-U HEPA-Type Mini Tower Air Purifier Review

HolmesĀ® HAP412N-U HEPA-Type Mini Tower Air Purifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using this Holmes Air Purifier for several months and can give it my 5 STAR recommendation.
It has 3 speed settings for the fan and a separate switch that turns on the ionizer. At the mid or low setting the fan is nice and quiet. On high it's a bit loud but tolerable for daytime activites. I keep my unit running all the time on the medium setting and also keep the ionizer turned on.
Within a couple of hours of first setting up the unit, I noticed an immediate improvement in the air in my bedroom (12 x 14). It seemed "fresher" and easier to breathe. After a few days my dust allergies were virtually gone and breathing, while I was asleep, was much easier. Before buying it, I would wake up with a stuffy nose and a dry mouth because my nose was plugged and I was forced to breathe through my mouth. (Yuk!)
The black soot commented on by the other reviewer is due to the negatives ions which attach themselves to the smoke particles in the room and make them drop to floor. If you don't smoke it won't be much of a problem. Some minor residue will be found in and around the unit but this comes about because the negative ions make dust and other particulates fall to the floor. A quick wipe or vacuum easily eliminates this problem. Besides, I would rather have them on the floor than floating around in the air, wouldn't you?
The cost of the unit is fabulous (less than $50.00). That sure beats other ionic units that want more than $300.00! I have owned both and will never go back after trying this one. It's cheap, effective and actually works better than the more expensive, but well known, model.

Honeywell HHT-145 HepaClean UV Antibacterial HEPA Tower 3-in-1 Air Purifier Review

Honeywell HHT-145 HepaClean UV Antibacterial HEPA Tower 3-in-1 Air Purifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am allergic to cats, so naturally I adopted two and I'm about to get a third. I was STRUGGLING with my allergies so started looking into air purifiers and found that Honeywell consistently had good reviews. This was a very new model at the time I purchased and I was a bit nervous about being a guinea pig but my allergies clicked the purchase button for me.
I had to return the first unit because it started making a strange cyclic humming sound, kind of like the motor was getting tired - I'd only had it for about two weeks. Amazon Return Center is amazing and I had a replacement unit in two days. The second unit is great, I've had no problems so far. It's whisper-quiet (unless you crank it up to its highest setting, which isn't necessary) and I really notice a difference in the quality of the air. If I turn it off, I start getting the sniffles and itchy eyes in no time. I don't use the UV feature, but I do like the ionizer.
***UPDATE*** Unfortunately I've also had to arrange for the second unit to be returned, this time I contacted Honeywell directly. The purifier has been getting progressively more noisy and it sounds like the motor is straining. I'm really surprised because I have a couple of cheaper Honeywell units that have been on 24/7 for almost the last year and I have had absolutely no problems with them. I just don't think this unit is ready for the market yet. Honeywell customer service has been excellent, they were responsive and are going to exchange the purifier for one of their higher models at no charge. I think I might try the Rabbit Air purifier if the next unit I receive is not satisfactory. SIGH!

I have had an older HealthPro Plus and just changed the HEPA filter. It smells bad. The same holds true on a new unit that I just put into service. I have read comments from others and understand that it is the newer HEPA filter that is causing the problem. I would not recommend any of the HealthPro models for purchase at this time, unless the issue of the smell has been taken care of by IQAir. Up until now, my older unit worked great, my wife was quite happy with it. Now, she hates it. I now have over $2,000 worth of air cleaners and spare filters, that I must consider replacing with something else from a different manufacturer.

This is an amazing deal I've had $5K air filters that performed similar to this filter. When I bought my first XJ- 30000 5 years ago they were going for 500 to 300 dollars I imagine the technology or scale has made them less expensive to make. Don't be fooled by those expensive air filters from evergreen or direct sales companies the mark up on them is 200x. Although this unit is not made in the USA what electronic gadget is these days? Instructions for removing UV bulb are not clear; I broke mine when cleaning because the instruction manual was not very informative in how to remove the bulb and had to order a new bulb. Also the warning indicator light for the electrostatic filter was lit, inicating the filter had to be cleaned. When I dissasembled the filter, the electrostatic filter was very clean without any collected dust.
