(More customer reviews)The reviews here sealed the deal for me, though I'd been considering an air filter for some time. At last I have one. I don't have any regrets about this Bionaire unit. Not only is the sound of the internal cylindrical fan very quiet, it even becomes rather soothing after awhile. Is there any downside to this very inexpensive unit? Only one: the unit has no timer (though even some more expensive units lack a timer), so if you'd like to cycle it on and off through the day (to conserve electricity, for example) then you may want to pick up one of those inexpensive electrical outlet timers to cycle the unit off and on. But the manual says you can leave the unit on its lowest setting forever if you'd like.
I have this Bionaire air filter running in a small room in which I share my bed with my computer and various stereo componants (actually, they're not in the bed with me, but nearby). With the use of the Bionaire, I've seen a reduction in the amount of dust these electronics tended to attract, though it has not - as one review implied it might - entirely alleviated the need to vacuum...but that was more of a dream than a real expectation anyhow. I am very pleased with this unit and have suggested it to friends. I also want to mention the aesthetics of the unit: It has nice pillow-like curves, a soft appearance that suits a bedroom just fine. It is a neutral color that further helps it vanish from your attention.

Blueair 402 Air Purification System Review

(More customer reviews)After reading reviews a number of places online, I decided to buy the Blueair products. In ended up sampling the 402, 501 and 601, and ultimately returned the 501 and 601 and replaced them with 402s.
The 402 is truly quiet. This was an important consideration for me; the reason I returned the 501 and 601 was because they were noisy. The 402 has four fan speed settings. The fastest is unpleasantly noisy; I would not want to be in the room while the unit is in this mode. The next fastest, though, is *much* quieter. We usually leave the units in this mode. Sometimes we use the next-to-slowest mode, for example when I'm watching a movie and sitting in a chair right next to the 402. The middle two speeds are sufficiently quiet that I never feel like I need to use the slowest speed. (The 501s and 601s are unbearably noisy at any but the slowest setting - which is slower than the middle speeds of the 402. For 2/3 the price you can move more air, more quietly. Go figure.)
The only downside to the unit is size. It is about the same size as a tower PC. It's tall enough not to easily fit under furniture, and it's airflow pattern (in one of the skinny vertical sides, out the opposite side) means that the best placement is with one of the long sides against a wall. If wall space is at a premium, it can be hard to find a place to put it.
I haven't had the units long enough to replace the filters yet, but I have taken out the filters that came with them, and put them back in. It was very easy to do. After two months, only one filter is showing any visible dirt - but the house is *much* less dusty.

Neoair PLUS Air Purifier and Air Cleaner Review

(More customer reviews)On the surface, this Neoair Plus has a ok spec. It is $300 for a compact purifier that has a low annual filter replacement cost of ~$60, a low power consumption of 70 Watts, not too noisy at 46 dB, and serving up to 600 square feet with a fan speed of 200 CFM. Now what can be wrong with such a purifier? Well, the problem is that NeoAir Plus is far weaker than it appears. The 200 CFM (cubic feet per minute) fan speed is not very powerful comparing to its competitors. Most purifiers on the market participate in the AHAM (Association Home Appliance Manufacturers) certification to get three CADR values (Clean Air Delivery Rating). There are 3 CADR values for smoke, dust and pollen removal rates. Neoair did not get certified and only reports its fan speed (200 CFM). This is very troubling because a fan speed does not indicate the cleaning power of a purifier. For instance, your typical fan at home has a CFM fan speed, but it has a "ZERO" CADR since it cannot purify air. The CADR of Neoair Plus is probably 200 at its best (where CADR = CFM). Honeywell 50250 has a certified 250 CADR and is sold at $150. 3M Filtrete FAP03-RC has an averaged 290 CADR and is $200. Whirlpool AP450 has an averaged 315 CADR and is $250. All three are cheaper and more powerful than Neoair Plus.
What also concern me is some of the marketing and customer services of this young company. It is rather important to point out that when Neoair claims this unit can serve 600 square feet, the statement is overrated and misleading. The industrial guideline written by the AHAM is to use the smoke CADR and a 5 air change per hour to estimate the usage space. While Honeywell, 3M, and Whirlpool purifiers are more powerful, they are suggested for a smaller usage space of 375, 348, 500 square feet, respectively. This is because these companies follow the standard guideline. (Even through 3M filtrete has a higher pollen and dust CADRs than the Honeywell 50250, 3M has a lower smoke CADR and therefore a lower recommended floor space) Using the standard definition, this Neoair Plus should be used for a 300 sq ft, half of its advertised 600 sq ft. The fact that Neoair did not go to an independent organization to certify their CADR should raise some eyebrows. This misleading 600 sq ft advertising tactic sure seems like a way to prey on average customers. Please understand that, unlike CADR, there is no legal guideline for defining the recommended floor space. Thus, companies can deviate from the standard calculation with no legal consequence. In this case, NeoAir used a 2.5 air change per hour for its calculation -- instead of 5. In addition, this company customer service is somewhat lacking. They do not seem to know their products well when I contact them.
Finally, even if you believe Neoair made a honest mistake, you have to wonder why you want to pay more for a weaker purifier. Let's just take Whirlpool AP450 as a comparison again. Whirlpool AP450 is rated as the number ONE purifier by Consumer Reports. Neoair Plus is $300 and Whirlpool AP450 is $250. Neoair Plus has a cleaning power of 200 CADR at best and Whirlpool has an averaged 315 CADR. Alternatively, you can get two Honeywell 50250 for the same price as Neoair Plus. So, here is another choice: one Neoair for ~200 CADR or two Honeywell for a total 500 CADR. I am simply wondering: Can someone honestly justify a purchase of Neoair Plus in light of all of these superior purifiers on the markets which also happens to have better support?
**For people who are interested here is the math. The recommended floor space is calculated based on a 8 feet ceiling height and a 5 air-change per hour condition. Let's uses Honeywell 50250 as an example. It has a 250 CADR which translates to a 250 cubic feet per minute cleaning speed or 15000 cu ft per hour. Now divides 15000 cu ft per hour by a 8 ft ceiling and by a 5 air change per hour will result a 375 floor space. A shortcut is to simply multiple the CADR value by "1.5". e.g.: 250CADR X 1.5 = 375 sq ft **

(More customer reviews)While it's difficult to directly measure the effect that this air filter is having on the environment with any degree of certainty without tools to measure air quality it certainly seems to me to be doing a good job. I wake up feeling better, and my sinuses have stopped giving me trouble. I'm able to breathe much better, and through both nostrils, consistently; it's been so long since I could do that I'd forgotten what it was like. I believe I'm even sleeping better because of it. And it is QUIET, on the low setting I dare say silent. I kept looking at the blue light to be sure it was on. The only complaint: I got the activated carbon filter and, apparently during shipping, some of the black dust got into the container an left noticeable black marks on a few places on the outside of the filter case. I haven't found any cleaner that will take them off yet, very stubborn. Oh, and the shipping was kind of slow.

(More customer reviews)I bought this product because of allergies. When I first got the product, it worked well and did the job. Once it needed to be cleaned, (in about 3 months), it didn't even come close to the way it worked when I first got it. I followed all the steps for cleaning the system. Nothing was damaged in cleaning as I was making sure not to damage anything. I put it back together and set it up again. It is running, but it is definately NOT working like it used to. So, I get 3 good months out of it. 300+ bucks down the drain. Warranty? Don't make me laugh. Oh, it has one. Just try using it. You'll shell out more money to them for fixing it. I liked this product at first, but now to me it's garbage and a waste of money. Look elsewhere for a air filter. I don't recomend this product at all. I don't care what the other reviews say. I only know my expierence with this product. Buy if you want to take a chance. I took a chance and I don't like the outcome. I can't even give this thing away, as nobody I know even wants it for free.

(More customer reviews)The Airpura R600 Air Purifier was purchased to remove cigar odor from the house when I entertain. I was looking for something that would sweep the air and remove the smell. It is good looking, but very loud. I had to turn up the volume of the television in order to hear the show. The noise is quite offensive. I thought that it would be quiet, no where in the product description did it give decibel levels or mention how loud it would be. As far as removing the smell of my cigars, I think it fails miserably. The room still smells of cigars the next day, you notice it as soon as you enter the house. I have followed the directons and have the machine running 24 hours a day as stated for maximum effectiveness.

(More customer reviews)Whirlpool stopped making the filter for my air purifier. I was concerned about the fit, functional quality, and durability of an aftermarket replacement product. The filter is a perfect fit, and it seems to be doing a good job. I don't have a quantitative way to compare the original filters to these. I can say they appear to be functioning identically to the originals. I don't detect any differences.
I gave this filter a 3 star rating simply because I cannot comment yet on the lifespan of the filter. It is just way too soon. Everything looks promising. If the lifespan is shorter than the original Whirlpool filter, I would not lower my rating. The longer it lasts, the higher my rating will be.

Filtrete Ultra Clean Room Air Purifier Model FAP02 Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this unit at a significant discount from an aforementioned deal-a-day web site. I think it is worth the price I paid for it (sub-$50), but no more. I'm a cheap-skate, too, so take that into consideration.
I don't know if I would call it a "purifier" as much as I would a "very good filter." I keep my FAP02 in our computer room, which also serves as the litter-box room. The kitty litter we use is very dusty, and this filter really cuts down on dust in the room. (Note: "cuts down," not "elimninates.") It's also very good at picking up cat hair. Our unit sits right next to the litter box, though, and the room is only 120 sq ft.
At low speed, it's quieter than my PC. At medium, it has a hum to it, but it sounds more like air coming through an air duct in a house. High speed is fairly loud. Our unit runs at medium 80% of the time, low 15% of the time, and the other 5% is high when I'm changing/adding kitty litter. With few exceptions, it has been running non-stop for 10 months.
The other thing to consider is the cost of replacement filters. I cannot find them at any of our three area nationwide discount retail-"marts", so I have to order mine online. No big deal because Amazon usually has them in stock, but each filter is about $20 and last for approximately 2-3 months. As stated earlier, I've had my unit for 10 months, and I am about 1 month in on my 4th filter. Doing the math, it's a filter every 3 months and about $7 dollars per month for filters. The unit does display flashing lights that turn red when it's time to change the filter. You may be tempted to change it early because it will look pretty nasty, but keep going until it tells you to change it. To check, you turn the unit on high which causes it to perform a self-check.
The FAP02 is not small either, and the closer to the center of the room, the better it's supposed to work. Mine sits alongside a wall, and the wall will get dusty. Considering that this is supposed to be for small rooms, finding a place to put it may be hard, and if you want it to not be seen, I wish you good luck.
In conclusion, I'm glad I bought this device, but I'm also glad I didn't pay more than I did. It does a good job filtering dust particles and cat hair, but consider the ongoing cost of replacement filters. The size of the unit can make placement in small rooms difficult and it's not necessarily an attractive device, so if you're style-conscious or don't like "gadgets" cluttering your room, you might not like this.
I took off 1.5 stars for suggested price and cost of ownership and a half star for noise and size.
