Blueair Medical Pro with VOC Filter Review

Blueair Medical Pro with VOC Filter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Solid choice based on the 402 with an upgraded motor more powerful that that found in current (2010) model 400 series units. Lose a point for an ion brush plate with four brushes versus the seven brushes found in current 400 series models. Despite what the directional airflow arrow on the VOC filter denotes, install the filter with the prefilter side (it is not a carbon postfilter) facing the ion brushes. All three units I haved tested emit airflow noise akin to rustling turbulence when used with the VOC filter. Unit also supports the use of Particle 402PF and SmokeStop 402SF filters. Why the MD Pro over IQAir at this price range? Size, overall decibel levels at comparable airflow ratings, power consumption (important when running the unit 24/7) and a superior warranty (10 years versus 5 years). Annual filter costs averaged over a five year period also favor the MD Pro (single MDPROVOCF filter with a 12-month filter life). Why not the MD Pro over IQAir at this price range? Degradation of filter efficiency due to loss of electrostatic activity as the filter media clogs, fewer pounds of carbon in the filter, some bypass of unfiltered air which accumulates on the exposed fan and motor of the MD Pro and vacuum maintenance requirements. FYI, I own multiple MD Pro units as well as an IQAir HeathPro Plus and am fully satisfied with them all.

Blueair 601 Air Purification System Review

Blueair 601 Air Purification System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have congestive lung disease and live in an apartment. When a new downstairs neighbor moved in, who is a heavy smoker, the smoke came up through the floorboards and into my place. I was literally choking to death. I tried taping over all the electrical outlets, putting special filers in the vents, and blocking every place I could think of where the fumes were entering. Nothing worked until I got the Blueair 601 with the smoke filters. It turns on automatically every time it "smells" smoke. I know exactly when my neighbor is smoking by when it turns on, but it filters all the smoke from circulating into my place. If it wasn't for the Blueair 601 I would have to move.

Blueair 402 Air Purification System Review

Blueair 402 Air Purification System

After reading reviews a number of places online, I decided to buy the Blueair products. In ended up sampling the 402, 501 and 601, and ultimately returned the 501 and 601 and replaced them with 402s.
The 402 is truly quiet. This was an important consideration for me; the reason I returned the 501 and 601 was because they were noisy. The 402 has four fan speed settings. The fastest is unpleasantly noisy; I would not want to be in the room while the unit is in this mode. The next fastest, though, is *much* quieter. We usually leave the units in this mode. Sometimes we use the next-to-slowest mode, for example when I'm watching a movie and sitting in a chair right next to the 402. The middle two speeds are sufficiently quiet that I never feel like I need to use the slowest speed. (The 501s and 601s are unbearably noisy at any but the slowest setting - which is slower than the middle speeds of the 402. For 2/3 the price you can move more air, more quietly. Go figure.)
The only downside to the unit is size. It is about the same size as a tower PC. It's tall enough not to easily fit under furniture, and it's airflow pattern (in one of the skinny vertical sides, out the opposite side) means that the best placement is with one of the long sides against a wall. If wall space is at a premium, it can be hard to find a place to put it.
I haven't had the units long enough to replace the filters yet, but I have taken out the filters that came with them, and put them back in. It was very easy to do. After two months, only one filter is showing any visible dirt - but the house is *much* less dusty.

Blueair 402 HEPASilent Air Purifier Review

Blueair 402 HEPASilent Air Purifier
Average Reviews:

While it's difficult to directly measure the effect that this air filter is having on the environment with any degree of certainty without tools to measure air quality it certainly seems to me to be doing a good job. I wake up feeling better, and my sinuses have stopped giving me trouble. I'm able to breathe much better, and through both nostrils, consistently; it's been so long since I could do that I'd forgotten what it was like. I believe I'm even sleeping better because of it. And it is QUIET, on the low setting I dare say silent. I kept looking at the blue light to be sure it was on. The only complaint: I got the activated carbon filter and, apparently during shipping, some of the black dust got into the container an left noticeable black marks on a few places on the outside of the filter case. I haven't found any cleaner that will take them off yet, very stubborn. Oh, and the shipping was kind of slow.

Purchased these for my Bluair 601 after my normal internet search and these were the least expensive out there. Only one problem found and it is trivial: the visible portion that shows through the screening didn't match up to the screening and leaves a border around what is visible. Hard to explain and no big deal but does annoy. Will purchase replacements from this vendor when it is time to replace current filters.

Blueair 501 Console Air Purifier Review

Blueair 501 Console Air Purifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Blueair company is a wonderful company to work with and helped settle my issues. I ordered 2 of the 501 units with replacement filters sight unseen based on user reviews. This is a very quality built unit, but the speed settings on the fan are far from usable. The lower speeds barely move enough air, yet the high speed is so noisy that you will think a tornado is in the room with you. The company gladly exchanged my 2 501 units with the 400 series units. The 401 units are far quieter and way more efficient in the way in which it moves the air, so order the 401, you can't go wrong. Keep in mind the 10 year warranty is only applicable if you can prove that you purchased and changed the filters every six months, if not no warranty exists, and the filters are not free, but affordable. In my opinion the 401 is the way to go, stay clear of the 501's due to the noise and air flow design, the Blueair company is second to none in customer support and are highly recommended. Thanks Blueair for helping me get it right....This is one heck of a company that will take care of it's customers. Also keep in mind when you order a Blueair purifier unit, one filter set will come included with the applicable unit that you order. If you order filters, they will be used later for replacements, I wasn't sure when I ordered if the filters were included but they were.

I moved into a house with a dusty a/c system and started looking for a purifier to relieve my itchy eyes and stuffy nose. I had to go to external websites to get reviews on this product... [...]. I bought the dual pack for the savings, but overall the money for product puts it in the middle price category for purifiers and it's absolutely worth it. One of my units went in the bedroom, so noise was a huge factor. All the reviews of this unit being quiet on Level 1 were spot on, I can't hear a thing when it's on 1 in the bedroom. It also had a slimmer design than the floor units, and mine mount on the wall very nicely to still allow furniture to be situated around it. Two thumbs way up.

Blueair 203 Air Purifier - Smokestop Review

Blueair 203 Air Purifier - Smokestop

Without a doubt, the Blue Air 203 is the best air purifier I've owned! Because my daughter has eczema, I've installed a number of purifiers throughout our house. Some good, some not-so-good. But, the Blue Air surpasses all of them. It's quiet and solidly built (made mostly of steel, not plastic). When you run it on low, you can barely hear it. And, its been on 24 hours a day, with no problems. So, once again, it gets my thumbs-up!

Average Reviews:

This is a great air purifier for a single room. I have severe dust and mold allergies, and can now sleep in my old, dusty, moldy house without waking up because I can't breath. I have been running it 24/7 with no noticeable change to my power-bill.

Cleaning the air five to six times an hour, this air-purification system provides a continuous supply of filtered air for rooms up to 14 by 12 feet (168 square feet). The unit will be appreciated by anyone suffering from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory conditions, or anyone who wants cleaner, more breathable air. It comes equipped with patented HEPASilent technology, which captures 99.97-percent of airborne particles as small as 0.1 micron in size, including dust, pollen, smoke, pet dander, dust mites, bacteria, fungi, and mold spores. Choose from three energy-efficient speed settings: low for 80 cfm, medium for 115 cfm, or high for 140 cfm. The unit draws air in from the back and releases fresh air out the top, delivering a CADR rating of 106 for smoke, 116 for dust, and 139 for pollen. Its progressive filter traps up to six times more dirt than competitive models, plus comes with a powerful carbon filter to help remove odors.
Thanks to Blueair's commitment to the environment, standard triclosan-coated paper or glass filter fibers have been replaced with safer, nontoxic polypropylene, one of the least harmful plastics, which produces only carbon dioxide and water as it decomposes, which means no toxins released into landfills or the air. Polypropylene's also waterproof, so the air filter naturally resists contamination from bacteria, viruses, and mold, without chemical additives or washes. Change the filter about every six months for high-quality long-lasting performance. One bonus HEPASilent particle filter comes included. Other highlights include a blue "power on" light, low-energy consumption (20 to 50 watts), galvanized steel housing, built-in carry handles, and an award-winning Swedish design. Energy Star certified, AHAM certified, and UL-listed, the air purifier measures 9-1/2 by 17 by 21 inches and carries a five-year limited warranty.

Blueair 250E Energy-Efficient Air Purifier with Remote Control and Digital Display Review

Blueair 250E Energy-Efficient Air Purifier with Remote Control and Digital Display
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First a note about the color-it is not really that beige like it looks in the picture, it's more of a nice off-white.
This is an okay model however it does not perform nearly as well as the next larger unit (402/403 models) both in terms of air filtering and quietness. While the 400 series is quite a bit larger, it actually takes up about the same floor space and affords you much better performance although looks more like a computer tower.
The 250E takes in air from the back and outputs it out the top, which means you can't place it up against a wall like you can with the 402/403 (which takes in and outputs air from the sides). You can place it 4" from the wall though. Also, because the 400 series is larger, the fan does not have to move as fast, which results in noticeably quieter operation, although the 250E isn't really that loud, it is not near silent at the lowest setting like the 403 is.
The 400 series also has a much more robust (thicker) filter. And, since the 250E outputs air out the top, you cannot put things like books on top of it like you could do with larger units.
This is not a bad unit for a small room though and the compact size is nicer than larger units. It does include a remote control and automatic sensor features, as well as a timer. However, I found that those don't really get used that much since you mostly would want to leave the unit on all the time and then manually turn it up when needed.
That said, the 402/403 unit is a lot larger and looks like a big computer tower. The 250E looks more appropriate for a small room/office and looks more like an air purifier. If you want something that looks a bit more discreet and your room isn't large, this 250E should suit you quite well indeed. You might also consider the Blueair 203W HepaSilent Air-Purification System, White which is a very similar unit for a lot cheaper, minus the remote control and automatic air sensor. Since you basically leave these on all the time and don't fool around with the controls that often, I think there is better value in the Blueair 203 unit.

Blueair ECO10 Energy-Star HEPASilent Air Purifier Review

Blueair ECO10 Energy-Star HEPASilent Air Purifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the first air purifier I ever purchased. I think the full list price of $900 is outrageous and would not have bought it at full price for what is almost a big computer case with a high quality fan and very high quality HEPA filters. However, I jumped at the chance to buy it at the 50% off sale price or $450. So far it's working really well. It's a bit bulky, but then all good air purifiers are because the filters need enough surface area to work properly. It achieves low power consumption largely by having a large filter area so that the air velocity can be kept low while keeping the air volume high. Low air velocity translates to lower energy consumption and lower noise.
At 10 Watts on the high setting, even if I run it 24/7, the energy consumption will be only $1 a month and my electricity rate in California is a high 14 cents per kWh.
The power switch's placement at foot level is very inconvenient. Unless you leave the unit on for 24 hours a day, everyday, you'll find it a chore to have to constantly bend down to access the switch.
The outside of the product's packaging, as well as all the websites I've visited(including Amazon), says the filters last up to 12 months. That's actually incorrect advertising. The manual says for "optimal use" the filters should be changed every six months. I've noticed the air flow decreased noticeably after 2 months of use at 12 hours a day. Furthermore, in order for the 10-year warranty to be valid, Blueair requires the buyer to change the filters every six months and to send in the registration as explicitly stated in the manual. Of course, the question is whether Blueair will require proof that the user bought new filters every six months when it comes time for warranty work. Oh, another thing, the warranty is only 10 years, not "lifetime" as the websites state, another incorrect advertisement!
The filters cost $100 per set. So if I change the filters religiously every 6 months, the filters alone will cost $200 a year, plus $12 a year for electricity. With charcoal, the operating cost will exceed $300 a year. Ouch! Also, keep in mind that this is just the operating cost for one large room (up to 300 sq. ft.) and not for the whole house.
It's quiet enough even on high that I can sleep with it on high, and on the low setting, it sounds about as loud as a somewhat loud computer case fan and is mostly unobtrusive. The fan noise is not unpleasant. In fact, I sometimes use it on the high setting as a passable white noise machine to drown out ambient noises when I go to sleep.
The only true negative with this unit is it's exclusively a particulates filter. It has no charcoal to absorb odor. In order for the purifier to be effective, I need to keep my bedroom door closed. When the filters were new, the air got stuffy overnight when I kept the door closed. I think it was the smell of the new filters, but after a couple of weeks, the stuffy smell went away. For those who want to filter odor, Blueair makes Smokestop filters include charcoal. The Smokestop filters cost almost twice as much as the regular Eco10 filters and are also not as readily available.
It's interesting to note that the Eco10 has virtually the same 250 CFM rating as the IQAir Heatlh Pro and practically the same percentage particulate reduction. Therefore the two units should have about the same area coverage rating. But the IQAir claims effective up to 900 sq. feet, whereas the Blueair Eco10 only claims 300 sq. ft. with 6 air changes per hour(which is the generally recommended rate by experts). This tells me the IQAir's capacity is overrated vs. the conservative rating of the Eco10. I tried to find the CADR rating of the IQAir but couldn't find it anywhere. Based on the fact that the Blueair Eco10 has a CADR of about 200, I surmise the IQAir has similar CADR. I just don't see how a 200 CADR unit can cover 900 sq. ft. Maybe that's why Consumer Report gave the IQAir a low rating.
Summary:
Pluses: very quiet compared to other brands, very effective filtration down to 0.1 micron at 99.97% efficiency, good air flow of around 250 CFM, good CADR rating of around 200, ultra low electricity consumption.
Minuses: short filter life, very high operating costs because of short filter life and expensive filters, no charcoal to absorb odors, unless you opt for the even more expensive Smokestop filters.
Bottomline: Quiet unit and very energy efficient, BUT the energy savings will not even come close to offsetting the high operating costs associated with the frequent changes of expensive filters.

Combining ease of use with an environmentally friendly design, this unique air purifier delivers cleaner, healthier indoor air for rooms measuring approximating 20 by 15 feet. Its front-access control knob allows for selecting from two speeds--HEPA silent or Max airflow. Even on "Max airflow" the air purifier delivers whisper-quiet operation at just 49 db. The unit also provides an ultra-efficient EC fan motor and HEPASilent technology, which uses electrostatic and mechanical filtration to quickly and quietly capture 99.97-percent of particles down to 0.1 micron in size, including allergens such as pollen grains, dust mites, mold spores, and pet-dander particles. Three HEPASilent filters come included.
The 100-percent recyclable filter should be replaced once a year, but vacuuming the purifier's main filter unit can help prolong filter life. The air purifier also comes with four pre-filters that trap large particles and ensure long-lasting performance. Other highlights include an award-winning Swedish design, smooth-rolling casters, and a CADR of 190 for smoke, 195 for dust, and 200 for pollen.
Furthermore, the purifier uses up to 95-percent less energy than other comparable air cleaners. In fact, it's more than earned its Energy Star rating. Even on high speed, the unit runs on just 10 watts of power, making it nearly 10 times more energy efficient than the minimum performance requirements established by the EPA's Energy Star program. Choosing Energy Star products can help save up to a third on energy bills, as well as on greenhouse gas emissions. All of which means purified indoor air without excess costs or impact on the environment. The air purifier measures 26 by 20 by 13 inches and carries a limited lifetime warranty.

We have this Blueair silent product in our bedroom and it is great! If I stay somewhere else without the Blueair I notice allergies.
Blueair quietly cleans the air in our room, and cuts back on the dust in our old home! If we don't run it we notice dust.
On the highest setting it makes a slight but pleasant fan sound, but you are only to run it on high for a little while for example before going to bed. Then, turn it down a notch or two, and you will have uncongested sleep, and less allergy symptoms in the morning!!
It is worth every penny for the relief!!!

Blueair 503 HepaSilent Air-Purification System Review

Blueair 503 HepaSilent Air-Purification System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off I am amazed at how quiet it is. It is only loud on the highest setting, and even that is bearable, it is similar to running a box fan on high. However, as soon as you switch to the next setting down, it is much quieter, about the sound of a low fan or in some cases the sound AC makes when running - I think this is a great setting still good air flow but much too quiet to disturb anyone. The next two settings down, I literally CANNOT HEAR AT ALL! Specifically the next one down, I can only hear if I put my ear up close to it, and the lowest setting, "HEPA silent" I had to feel the airflow to be sure it was running. This is great, compared to my other air purifier (Honeywell 50250N) it is much quieter - it's second highest speed setting is as or more quiet than the lowest setting on my Honeywell, and it is also designed to cover a larger area and has a special filter option for filtering smoke.
I've only just bought it and ran it one day, so I can't say yet for sure how well it will filter the air, but so far it seems to be doing a good job, the air smells fresher and I haven't noticed the occasional smoke order - I'll be able to tell better when it gets colder and the people in the apartment below me and around me smoke more indoors. The reason I got it was particularly to deal with the chain-smoking idiots who live below and around me - whenever it gets cold they pretty much smoke constantly inside their apartment, and all the smoke seems to get filtered by the apartment building design into my apartment. I may update this review after I've used the purifier for a few months.

Providing five air changes per hour in rooms up to 580 square feet, this sleek-looking air purifier effectively delivers healthier indoor air--ideal for people living with allergies, asthma, or other respiratory conditions, or for anyone who wants cleaner, more breathable air. Its HEPASilent technology uses electrostatic and mechanical filtration to quickly and quietly capture 99.97-percent of particles down to 0.1 micron in size, including allergens such as pollen grains, dust mites, mold spores, and pet-dander particles (CADR rating of 375 for smoke, dust, and pollen). Even more, its three-stage progressive filter traps up to six times more dirt than competitive models. The unit also reduces annoying drafts thanks to its SurroundAir system, which draws in dirty air from the sides and bottom, moves it through the filter, and then gently diffuses clean, filtered air from the sides and top. Choose from three speed settings: HEPASilent for nighttime use, moderate fan speed for daytime use, or maximum fan speed for fast initial cleaning or very polluted air. Each setting offers quiet operation, which makes the air purifier ideal for in a bedroom or office.
Other highlights include galvanized steel construction, a blue "power on" light, a digital filter-replacement indicator, and easy maintenance--just open the lid, lift out used filters, and drop in replacements at least once every six months. Made of nontoxic polypropylene, the 100-percent-recyclable filter media produces only carbon dioxide and water as it decomposes, plus it's waterproof, which makes it naturally resistant to bacteria, viruses, and mold, without chemical additives or washes. Best of all, the appliance has earned an Energy Star rating, which means it meets strict energy-efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy. Energy Star products can help save up to a third on energy bills, as well as greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, all of which means more comfortable indoor air without excess costs or impact on the environment. The air purifier measures 13 by 20 by 26 inches and carries a five-year limited warranty.

Blueair 403 HepaSilent Air-Purification System Review

Blueair 403 HepaSilent Air-Purification System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Some of the online specs are misleading. The Blueair 403 unit (at least the one I received) actually has 4 speeds, just like the Blueair 402! Even the manufacturer's own website as of this review lists it as having only 3 speeds. The only difference between the 402 and 403 is that the 403 comes with a small electronic timer that is magnetic (you can put it on your refrigerator or on the Blueair unit itself) which shows you when 6 months are up and it's time to replace the filter. This is handy, but not really needed. So, if you can still find a 402 (now discontinued) for a good price, I'd recommend you grab it!
This is a great unit but it is a bit larger than I expected. If you have a small bedroom or office, it may look a bit imposing. It runs very quiet at the two lowest settings and even at the third setting, I found the sound soothing enough to sleep with. In fact, the first night I had it, I put it on the 3 speed setting and found the sound quiet nice and relaxing.
It works very well and is more efficient and quieter than smaller units. The design is also more proven; I compared it with a smaller unit (the 250E) and the 403 works a lot better for a number of reasons (better filter, it pre-charges the particles so that they stick to the filter, and has a larger, thicker filter). The 403 also has a deeper, more soothing and relaxing sound than the smaller unit. Because of the design, you can put things like books on top of it if you want to since it takes in and outputs air from the sides. You can also place it against a wall, something you cannot really do with the smaller 250E unit as it has the filter on the back and outputs air out the top. Also, larger units like the 500 series output air out the top (and sides) so you would not be able to put something on top of those either. I'm not saying I would use my Blueair 403 as a bookshelf or anything, just that it can be convenient to place a magazine or book or two on the top surface at times.
I will now buy a second 403 unit for my living room because I am so impressed. Having two or more of the same series in different rooms throughout the house seems a benefit as you only have one type of filter to buy for them all. However, if your living room is on the large side, you may need a larger unit (such as the 500 series so check your square footage). Note that the 500 series is *much* louder though.
All in all, this is a great unit as it performs very well is *very* quiet and well made. I feel I sleep much better with this unit on and also have much less allergy symptoms including less red and itchy eyes. Even if you don't suffer from allergies, you can still benefit from having nice fresh air all the time. My guess is that you will sleep better and feel more rested when you wake up. As for myself, the Blueair has practically been a lifesaver-I feel a lot more healthy and my allergy symptoms are virtually gone!

Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier - Black Review

Austin Air Healthmate Plus Air Purifier - Black

We bought the AustinAirHealthmate+ because the our apartment felt small and close- which with only two of us it shouldn't (about 700sqft). We live in an old building- and despite all our efforts to keep it clean the air still felt... old. Not a big deal at first- but eventually it got to us and we decided to buy an air purifier. I did LOTS of research, and came to the conclusion that this was what we needed (best value, cost, reliability, warranty, odor control and filtering...maintenence costs- all with a low power draw.)
When you turn it on you are supposed to leave it on the high setting for an hour - we did that- and in 15 minutes the change in air quality was so drastic I am still amazed. I was washing dishes and suddenly our small apartment didn't seem so small. 30 minutes latter I felt I was breathing better and clearer than I had since I moved to the city- an hour latter I could have sworn I was off in the country or on a mountain top. I had no idea purified air could be this good.
After one day my wife and I resolved to have one of these filters on for the rest of our lives. After two days we didn't even mind how much we paid for it. And if you break down the cost of purchase and filter replacement over the five years it should come to about $15 dollars a month- with regular maintenance these guys routinely last 15 years (supposedly)...
I am still amazed with how much better my wife and I feel breathing this air- and we don't have asthma or allergies. I am impressed- and Austin has a new customer.
