Laser Air Quality Monitor Review

Laser Air Quality Monitor

I bought one of the Dylos monitors several months ago and I was initially quite impressed. I have the more advanced, 0.5 micron model, and it reported count readings that seemed to correlate with time of day (lower reading at night) and activity (e.g. higher reading when I am dusting) However, I was not as impressed after it started to report readings that were inexplicable. For example, after a while, the reading seem to rest on a plateau of about 2200 (which signified bad air quality), whereas before it should normally read 700. I taped a piece filter paper to cover the ingress and the reading will drop to 1700. So I called up Dylos customer and technical support, who were very friendly and helpful. However, the answers I got from them were not entirely encouraging. First, the monitor had no calibrating function. So, if you suspect the reading is too high (as in my case) or too low, you are just left wondering; and of course, once you think a test or measuring tool is suspect, you don't trust/use it! Second, both the ingress and egress of the monitor has no wire gauze to protect insects from getting inside. This is not good, because if an insect got inside and contaminated the lens, the readings would be completely meaningless. Third, worse yet, you are not supposed to open up the monitor (it will void the warranty; laser might injure your eye if you are not careful) to do any cleaning. So, if, over time, cooking grease vapor, say, condensed on the surface of the lens, the accuracy of the reading would be called into question, and you cannot do any meaningful cleaning. Dylos technical support was kind enough to check and service the monitor for me (even though I admitted to having opened the unit), but the monitor still does not work right.
So, as much as I appreciate the good folks at Dylos, who really tried to help me, I just do not find this monitor a reliable tool, due to the design flaws I outlined above, which I hope they would address in a subsequent version. I hope your experience is better.

Duracraft HEPA fits DA-5030, DA5000C,260 HEP-5030 Review

Duracraft HEPA fits DA-5030, DA5000C,260 HEP-5030
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The duracraft Hepa 260 (MODEL 5030) was our first air purifier we purchased. Reason being is because of the misery of allergy season and declared that I wasn't going to suffer through this again. I have discovered since the first purchase that one needs to have one purifier for the living room and another one for the bed room.
Replacement filters are still available on line at iAllergy ; just search for Duracraft 5030.
We have three dogs One sunny day I could see dense floating dust particles in the sunbeams shining through the window and I was amazed how thick and dense it was; the dust and dander was getting to be a real problem in our house. So we brought the Duracraft out of the garage ( it was mothballed) purchased a new filter and now we are in business again.
The Duracraft Hepa 260 which is identical to the Honeywell HEPA 200, has three speeds; Super (near hurricane strength) High and Silent. We run ours on High. Now it's only fair to warn you that the 260 moves a lot of air with it's powerful motor; which is louder than our Honeywell 18155 but that is a good thing. I we want a powerful motor to exchange as much volume of air as possible; also compared to the 18155, the Duracraft has more intake vents and moves more air too.
The 260 has an optional ozone switch; the jury is still out as to the pros and cons of that issue; but at least you have that option available to you.
The only thing that's missing would be a change or clean filter lights like on the 18155; but that is a minor issue. We prefer the Duracraft 260 over the Honeywell 18155 by far and it's a disappointment it is no longer available.
We vacuumed the 260 when the filter looks dirty thus saving $$$ n a new filter. Which doesn't seem to effect it's performance. TRUE Hepa filters are still available at iallergy (on line) if you search duracraft 260 or model 5030.
AHAM rating for this unit is 170 for tobacco, dust & pollen each.
If the white noise will be an issue with you, you may want to consider the less powerful Honeywell 18155
We recommend that you operate your Honeywell air cleaner 24 hours a day because indoor air can be quickly contaminated by activity in a room, infiltration of outside air, and generation by sources of contamination. While all the air in a room will not be processed by the air cleaner, the more air circulated through the filter, the more filtered air returned to the room. Portable air cleaners will be much more effective in rooms where all doors and windows are closed.
The Honeywell True HEPA air cleaner is ready to begin cleaning the air as soon as it is removed from the carton and plugged in. Because it circulates air in a 360 degree pattern around the air cleaner, it can be placed on the floor in almost any location. However, for best performance the air outlet slot should not be blocked for at least 1 meter (three feet) in all directions.
Due to the large volume of air drawn to wards the air cleaner, surrounding areas should be cleaned and/or vacuumed frequently to prevent buildup. This may help keep your home cleaner and may extend the life of your pre-filter. If the unit is placed on light colored carpeting, a small mat or rug should be used to ease cleaning and prevent any permanent staining. This is particularly important in homes with heavier contamination from smoking or fireplaces.

Aprilaire 5000 Electronic Air Cleaner Review

Aprilaire 5000 Electronic Air Cleaner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Very happy with this filter system. It really works to clean smoke from the house. Our house has been closed up for about the past month, running the air. Usually, we get enough cool weather to open windows an night... not this year. Running the variable fan on my furnace constantly on very low and as the air kicks in, I can't even tell we've been smoking as we come in from outside. Very Good!
I had turnd off (unpluged) the electrostatic part for a (I'd thought) day... forgot I'd done it and it went a few weeks before the smoke smell forced me to check it. A few days after repluging it in, the house was clean again (no residual smoke signature)! Had it 6 months or so and will probably replace the filter for first time in another month or 2, since I run it constantly this summer.

Honeywell Replacement Filter for 16060 Review

Honeywell Replacement Filter for 16060
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you think this is the real and genuine Honeywell filter #16960 then you are mistaken. It is an imitation product made by BestAir that is NOT equivalent to the name brand filter. It fits my air cleaner and there is some sort of black fine grained filter fabric on the front face as expected. However the back white filter is far inferior. Instead of having a tightly fit ribbed accordion type filter with a high surface area on the backside, there are only a fraction of the ribs and my guess is about 1/5 the surface area. The description says "Item model number 16960" which is the Honeywell number I thought I was getting. This is deceiving because it is not the BestAir model number. The actual model number listed by BestAir is D110. DO NOT buy this product expecting an equivalent product to the name brand item.

Multitec Ion Air Purifier Review

Multitec Ion Air Purifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bought three of these based on reviews from their own website. Should have known better. My air conditioner filters more particulate. The filter intake barely could hold a tissue in place, so you can tell there is really not much volume passing through. The fans are not strong enough to pull air through the filter. The filter medium is just too thick and air does not easily pass through. The ozone feature deoderizes, but I wanted air purification. We noticed no difference in air quality. Go with a better known brand like the Hamilton Beach. To the reviewer who suggested the filter cover may not have been removed - the perforated cover was removed.

Providing five air changes per hour in rooms up to 605 square feet, this sleek-looking air purifier effectively delivers healthier indoor air--ideal for people living with allergies, asthma, or other respiratory conditions, or for anyone who wants cleaner, more breathable air. Its HEPASilent technology uses electrostatic and mechanical filtration to quickly and quietly capture 99.97-percent of particles down to 0.1 micron in size, including allergens such as pollen grains, dust mites, mold spores, and pet-dander particles (CADR rating of 388 for smoke, 377 for dust, and 378 for pollen). In fact, its three-stage progressive filter traps up to six times more dirt than competitive models. Choose from four fan speeds: low for nighttime use, moderate for daytime use, or high to maximum for fast initial cleaning or for larger rooms. Automatic mode continuously monitors the air quality and selects the speed accordingly. Each speed offers quiet operation, which makes the air purifier ideal for in a bedroom or office. Even more, the unit comes with a handy remote control for changing the settings from a distance of up to 20 feet, while its digital screen gives instant feedback on particle detection, air purifier speed, and timer operation.
Other highlights include active carbon filtration to remove VOCs and odors from the air, durable housing, a blue "power on" light, smooth-rolling casters, and easy maintenance--just open the lid, lift out used filters, and drop in replacements at least once every six months. Made of nontoxic polypropylene, the 100-percent-recyclable filter media produces only carbon dioxide and water as it decomposes, plus it's waterproof, which makes it naturally resistant to bacteria, viruses, and mold, without chemical additives or washes. Best of all, the appliance has earned an Energy Star rating, which means it meets strict energy-efficiency guidelines set by the EPA and U.S. Department of Energy. Energy Star products can help save up to a third on energy bills, as well as greatly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, all of which means more comfortable indoor air without excess costs or impact on the environment. Three HEPA particle filters and three gas filters come included. The air purifier measures 13 by 20 by 26 inches and carries a five-year limited warranty.
