Holmes HAP725-U 99.97% HEPA Air Purifier Review

I purchased this item because I had been looking for a reasonably priced true HEPA room air filter with no ionizer. I have heard conflciting information on the safety of ionizers which produce ozone in the home so I did not want that feature, though it is popular right now. I have pet birds which are high dander and wanted to filter the air in the room the birds are in, both for my health and the birds' health.
I have been really happy with this product. The box says it is for a 16' x 16' room. I am using it in a 12' x 16' room and it seems to do the job. It is compact and is designed to sit on its end or on its side, whichever you prefer. It is beige and unobtrusive. The item is ready to go right out of the box - you just have to install the carbon filters (HEPA filters are pre-installed at the factory). Installing the filters is a snap. The air filter is simple to use. There is power button to turn it on and off and it has four operating speeds, 1 through 4. You can also set a timer function that allows you to set the filter to run for 1-16 hours and then automatically shut off. Impressively, the unit comes with a FIVE YEAR manuafacturer's warranty, something you don't see very often.
I researched HEPA air filters extensively before this purchase. Some HEPA filters cost $50-70 each to replace! This unit's filters are readily available in Wal Mart and Target. Amazon sells a two pack of HEPA filters for this unit that currently costs $32 and a four pack of carbon filters that costs $12. The manufacturer says that the HEPA filters will need changed every 6-12 months and the carbon filters every 3-6 months. Keep in mind that this unit uses two HEPA and two carbon filters. The unit also has indicator lights for each filter to tell you when they need changed. I'll probably spend $88 a year on the filters but that is much lower than for many other HEPA filters I looked at!
I run the unit on speed "3" for about 12 hours per day though you could run the unit continuously. It does a great job of circulating the air. Within the first day I noticed a marked improvement. I can't see very much dust in the air anymore, even in bright light (when you can see the floating dust particles in a room). Also, lots of the bits of feathers and fluff from the birds that used to float throughout the rest of the house are gone. The room did not have an obvious odor before but I really think the carbon filters have made the room smell "fresher."
The only drawback I can think of is that is it somewhat noisy at speeds 3 and 4 which are the most effective speeds. I don't consider this a problem because I am fond of white noise in the background. Some people might find it too noisy at the higher speeds.
Update November 2006: After five months of continuous use this filter stopped working in September 2006. I followed the instructions for returning the item for warranty service which required me to pay for return shipping and also pay to ship the item back. Within about a week Holmes had sent me a brand new filter that is actually a newer, larger, model worth more than the one that had failed. They gave me no hassle and replaced the filter with a better model. This new model is working fine so far. I am pretty pleased with Holmes prompt replacement.

Electrolux EL500AZ Oxygen Ultra Air Cleaner Review

Electrolux EL500AZ Oxygen Ultra Air Cleaner
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
No one's reviewed this unit yet? It surprises me. I really like it. It has lowered the overall odor in my home and completely eliminated the pungent odor from daily hookah smoking from my dining and sitting room in about a month running on auto-mode. The 5 speeds it has goes from a soft soft whisper up to a bit of a roar and the amount of air it moves is noticeable too. I've been using it for a nearly 2 months now and believe it's very effective. I have a chronic low level sinus issue where stuff in the air can really bother them and many times don't breathe well at night and wake up very fuzzy-headed, but in the first week of having the 2 different Electrolux purifiers in the house I wake up feeling alert and clear-headed now. I certainly didn't expect that! There are so many fake air purifiers out there and I did some homework on the technologies to weed out the fakes and reading reviews to weed out the ones with issues.
I researched and shopped around for the best purifier at a reasonable cost and this is it in my opinion. I'm a senior electronics technician of over 25 years by occupation in the fields of medical and telecom equipment and good at understanding how technologies whether electrical or mechanical works.
I'm very skeptical about the claims they all make and there are so many of these too good to be true purifiers that work by magic or seem to be really leading edge sophisticated technology that's not so much. Honestly when I started educating myself on air purifiers it got confusing. I spent many hours over a month or so looking at all the different makes and trying to eek all the science out of each one. These Electrolux units I think are solid and clean the air with a simple 3 stage process instead of 6 to 9 steps and the extra maintenance and cost that would entail to do maybe as well as this one. I think that this unit does as well or better as some of the ones that go for $500 or more.
This Electrolux is well worth the money if you have a larger area with it's ability to move a lot of air and it's CADR specs are impressively higher than some of these high priced things that rate half as good and do little more than a walk-in closet. Between the HEPA filter and the PlasmaWave ionizer it scrubs the air of everything and it's cool how it senses when the air needs more cleaning and steps the fan speed up to clean more and gives an indication on a 5 segment display. Mostly I just leave it in auto mode and it adjusts as needed to the air quality. The air in the house is not only dust free as in I never see anything floating in the air through the sunlight or a lamp, but the overall odor that the place had has been much neutralized. It does a great job of eliminating cooking odor even if I don't use the kitchen range exhaust fan.
I've figured out that these Electrolux units are built on the same chassis as the Winix 5300, Sharp Plasmacluster, and possibly the Rabbit BioGS. Seriously go look them up and tell me they aren't based on the same unit! But all have wildy varying ratings and prices and the brute performance and low price of theElectrolux makes it for me the cream at the top.
I can't think of anything to ding it on; the quality seems very good and the construction is solid. It's very good so it gets a 5 star. I'll revisit this review later and update it from a longer term perspective.
I also have the EL490A that I use upstairs. It's a lower CADR rating but still higher than most, does about 80 sq ft less area and half the price. My overall impression with that unit is the same as this one; superb!
It's been over a year now and I still like it as well as the day I got it. The overall odor of the house is much more neutral than it was since it sucks the odor out of everything in the place and the amount of dust throughout the house is noticeably lower!

Get tough on dust and even tougher on odors with the Electrolux Oxygen Ultra Air Cleaner. Its PlasmaWave technology uses positive and negative ions to remove odor-causing airborne pollutants. Powerful hydroxyls bond with and neutralize the remaining pollutants. A potent sensor detects foul odors and adjusts the fan speed to clear the air quickly. CADR-rated for rooms up to 405 square feet, making it perfect for living rooms and offices. The Oxygen Ultra is also extremely quiet, making it ideal for bedrooms too. Includes 1 HEPA filter and 4 carbon filters. A light indicates when the HEPA filter needs to be replaced. For optimum performance, change it once a year and the carbon filter every 3 months. The Oxygen Ultra is Energy Star-rated and costs you only pennies a day to operate in auto mode. Also includes a handy remote control that lets you control the air speed from anywhere in the room. The remote fits perfectly flush on top of the Oxygen Ultra so you won't lose it. 5-year limited warranty.

Therapure® Air Purifier with UV Light and Permanent HEPA Type Filter Review

Therapure® Air Purifier with UV Light and Permanent HEPA Type Filter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am completely ecstatic with this air purifier.
Design: Very sleek design, with blue light up buttons.
Noise: Unless you can't even stand the hum from a laptop, this purifier is really quiet. Even on the highest setting, you can tune it out very easily. On the lowest setting, you can't hear it at all.
Quality: When we brought it home and hooked it up, we noticed it working almost immediately. We have an old heater, so it still has that musty smell whenever we turn it on, this got rid of the smell so fast. Also, we self-medicate, so this got rid of the smell so quickly-- our apartment smells so pleasant now, and the air feels so clean, I would definitely recommend this product.
Perks: No replacement filter, you simply clean the same one.
- Notification for Filter Cleaning
- replaceable UV light bulb, only needs to be replaced once a year.
- Stand-up design.

I recently purchased this unit to supplement my Vornado AQS-15 because of ongoing allergy problems. I had some reputable mold inspectors in the other day and they did output readings on both machines. The Rabbit Air 421A let through more than twice as much particulate matter as did the simple and much less expensive Vornado ($119) which has only a hepa and a pre-filter. The discrepancy was so extreme that we all thought it must be a mistake and they repeated the readings with the same results.
I asked them what they would recommend for multi-filter multi-function purifier--they suggested BlueAir.

Hunter 30124 HEPAtech 124 Air Purifier Review

Hunter 30124 HEPAtech 124 Air Purifier
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am completely impressed with this machine. I did a lot of research of air purifiers and finally settled on the HunterFan 30124. This item was intended to help clear an 11x11 bedroom from allergens as well as refresh stagnate air. It does not disappoint. The air is clean and odorless in just a few hours of initial use. There is a very natural feel to the room as well. My allergies have considerably improved as a result of running this machine on low. How does it sound? Well I can't even hear it from six feet away on the low setting. On it's medium setting you definitely hear it running, but it isn't a motor sound or a hum, it's just like a box fan. The high setting is the same as the medium only a bit more forceful. You begin to hear the hum. It doesn't rattle. I bought mine at iallergy.com and had an amazing experience. It's $94.00 shipping included. I had two day delivery and prompt friendly phone and email service. I'm particularly impressed with the high CADR ratings. A note on this though...This particular air purifier works in a 15x17 room, and I have mine in an 11x11. What this does is allow you to run the machine at low and avoid any noise on the medium setting (not that it is overly bothersome at that speed). Also, when you kick it up to medium or high, the refresh rate is super fast. Now, GO GET ONE and make your lungs happy!

A good quality Hepa filter and the price was right. Shipping and handling charges were, however, excessive! I would not purchase from this vendor again because of the "fake" low price. $8 for shipping two small, light weight filters is far too much IMO.

83159 Sears/Kenmore Air Cleaner HEPA Filter Review

83159 Sears/Kenmore Air Cleaner HEPA Filter
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am looking for a Hepa Filter for Kenmore 85254 Air Cleaner, part number is 83195 per manual. I can tell you that while this looks correct in the photo the measurements are not correct for the hepa filter that I have now, which was the original. And since the cost of this filter is soooo much cheaper I am leery as to whether this information is correct, just saying.
